Why is America Called That

Here is a recent NYTimes article talking about the mysteries of why America is called that.  Yes we know who named it and why, but why did the mapmakers Martin Waldseemüller and Mathias Ringmann name it after Amerigo Vespucci.     I found the article on the Twitter chat #sschat from the handle @BillChapman.https://twitter.com/classroomtools
