Resources for this week's lesson on Industrial America

On the first week back after winter break, I'm assigning my students an in-class project to help them learn about Industrial America during the Gilded Era.  I call it a Learning Folder.  I'm giving them each a blank 8-1/2 x 14 legal-sized manila folder, and giving them the links listed below for their research.  Here's what they are going to do:
Top outside panel: Students will make a timeline of 10 major events in labor history before 1914.  Research links for the timeline are here, here, and here.

Left inside panel: Students will read about four major disturbances during the Gilded Era (Haymarket, Pullman Strike, Homestead, and Great Railway Strike of 1877), and choose any three to write about.  They will divide the left inside panel into three sections and label each section with the name of a labor disturbance.  They will then draw four illustrations about each incident, using information from these six links: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.  Each illustration will be accompanied by a 2-3 sentence explanation.

Right inside panel: Students will sketch an outline of the contiguous 48 US states, and then locate and label the sites of the four major labor-unrest incidents on that map.  A blank US outline map is here, and a base map listing the incidents is here.

Back outside panel: Were Andrew Carnegie's words and deeds consistent?  That's the question students will consider on this panel.  They will draw six illustrations assessing Carnegie's life, using information from these seven links: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.  Each illustration will be accompanied by a 2-3 sentence explanation.

Of course this not the totality of the work for this week.  I'll be delivering short interactive presentations using Nearpod, my students will be taking review quizzes and reading quizzes using Quia, and we'll be doing a lot of writing.

It's great to be back!
