Your Teacher's Tool-Kit for the national observance of Dr. King's Birthday

Monday is the annual national observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, birthday.

Illinois was the first state to recognize a holiday in Dr. King's honor in 1973.  It wasn't until 1999 that a King Holiday was recognized on the state level by all fifty states.  A national holiday on the third Monday of every January, to be called the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Holiday, was enacted in 1983 and became effective in 1986.
